Vladimir Volegov - Master of Romantic Realism
Step into the luminous world of Vladimir Volegov, where classical technique meets contemporary vision in breathtaking portraits that capture the soul.
The Artist’s Journey
Born in Khabarovsk, Russia, on December 19, 1957, Vladimir Volegov’s path to artistic mastery began with childhood sketches and an unwavering passion that his mother couldn’t redirect toward medicine. Even at age 13, young Vladimir was earning his first rubles drawing propaganda slogans, and by 14, he was creating impressive 3-meter cinema posters that became the centerpieces of local youth gatherings.
Volegov’s formal artistic education began at an arts school in Krivoi Rog, where he discovered the profound works of Russian masters Ilya Repin and Valentin Serov. These early influences would shape his understanding of light, form, and the emotional depth that great portraiture demands
His talent was undeniable—when he applied to the School of Graphics at Lvov Institute of Printing Art in 1980, his entrance exam painting was so compelling that the admissions committee unanimously accepted him despite his lackluster performance in other subjects.

From Soviet Posters to International Recognition
The 1980s marked a pivotal period in Volegov’s career. As head of the SPLAV artistic association in Krivoi Rog, he began participating in international poster exhibitions, achieving remarkable success across multiple competitions from 1984-1988. His accolades during this period included winning the All-Union Competition of Caricatures in “Komsomolskaya Pravda” in 1985 and taking first place in the Soviet-Poland Competition of Poster in 1988. It was also during this time that he encountered the works of Swedish master Anders Zorn, whose masterful handling of light and flesh tones would profoundly influence Volegov’s developing style.
The late Soviet era’s artistic restrictions couldn’t contain Volegov’s growing ambitions. In 1988, he made the bold decision to relocate to Moscow, starting his new chapter painting portraits on the famous Arbat street while establishing connections with publishing houses and advertising agencies. His commercial versatility was remarkable—collaborating with major record companies like “Melody,” “RDM,” “Moroz Records,” “General Records,” and “REC Records,” while also winning the competition for the best poster for “Tsar’s Hunting” movie in 1991. The chaotic years of the 1990s saw him accepting every creative opportunity, from sculpture installations like his 1994 “Reebok” project to body painting demonstrations in Austria, as he honed his craft and survived Russia’s economic turmoil.

European Wanderings and Artistic Evolution
Volegov’s artistic odyssey took him across Europe in 1990, where he earned his living painting street portraits in Barcelona, Berlin, and Vienna. For a decade, he participated in Austria’s Summer Portrait project in Wels, building an international reputation one canvas at a time. His commercial work designing album covers for Russian entertainment industry caught the attention of celebrities, leading to a steady stream of portrait commissions. Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, his creative output was prolific—designing magazines like “Andrey” and creating the newspaper “Andrey Express,” publishing caricatures of famous Russian stars, and serving as chief artist on “New Comics” magazine.
A serendipitous discovery in 1992 would prove transformative. While working as a contracted painter in Italy’s Gardaland park, Volegov purchased a book of Giovanni Boldini’s reproductions at a local market. The Italian master’s dynamic brushwork and elegant portraiture resonated deeply with the Russian artist, opening new possibilities for his own artistic expression.

The Impressionist Revelation
Everything changed when Volegov encountered the Impressionist masters’ original works at Paris’s Musée d’Orsay. The experience was nothing short of revelatory, inspiring him to dedicate more time to pure artistic creation rather than just commercial work. By 2000, he had established his first website showcasing both commercial and fine art pieces, which eventually caught the attention of an art manager who would change his career trajectory.
International Success and Romantic Realism
In 2004, Volegov signed a significant long-term contract with Soho Editions in New York, marking his entry into the American art market. This period coincided with his discovery of masters like John Singer Sargent and Joaquín Sorolla, whose influence helped him fully embrace romantic realism—a style that would define his mature work. His success continued with exhibitions at Art Expo NY in 2006 and 2007, establishing his presence in the competitive American art scene.
The year 2006 brought personal and professional milestones. Volegov and his wife Ekaterina relocated to Spain, where their son Anton was born. The following year marked the beginning of successful collaborations with prestigious Galeries Bartoux in France and galleries across the United States, Italy, and Sweden. His competitive spirit remained strong—in 2007, he won the fast painting competition at Lloret de Mar, Spain, and followed up with another victory in 2009 at the fast painting competition in Caldes de Malavella, Spain, taking third place.
Innovation and Artistic Expansion
Never content to rest on his achievements, Volegov ventured into three-dimensional art in 2011, creating collectible dolls that debuted at international exhibitions in Paris (Doll Expo 2012), Barcelona, and New York (Art Expo NY 2012). This innovative expansion demonstrated his versatility and willingness to explore new artistic territories while maintaining his commitment to figurative excellence. His artistic recognition continued to grow globally, with exhibitions spanning from Russia to Japan—including publications in corporate calendars for “Materia Medic” in Moscow and international showcases in Tokyo. The 2010s saw him exhibiting across Europe and beyond, from the Waterhouse Gallery in Santa Barbara, California, to galleries in Sweden, Belgium, France, and Italy, culminating in demonstrations at prestigious venues like Stockholm’s Antic and Art Fair.

The Volegov Style
Vladimir Volegov’s paintings are instantly recognizable for their luminous quality and emotional depth. His romantic realism captures intimate moments with remarkable sensitivity, particularly in his preferred subjects of women and children. His technique combines classical academic training with impressionistic handling of light, creating works that feel both timeless and contemporary.
The artist’s brushwork varies from precise detail in facial features to loose, confident strokes in backgrounds and clothing, creating a beautiful contrast that draws the viewer’s eye to the subject’s expression. His color palette tends toward warm, golden tones that imbue his subjects with an inner glow, while his mastery of light creates dramatic yet gentle illumination that flatters without sacrificing authenticity.
Legacy and Continuing Journey
Today, Vladimir Volegov continues to paint from his Spanish studio, balancing private portrait commissions with gallery exhibitions worldwide. His work represents a bridge between classical Russian academic training and contemporary international art markets, proving that traditional figurative painting remains as relevant and powerful as ever.
Through his art, Volegov captures fleeting moments of beauty and emotion, transforming them into lasting treasures that speak to viewers across cultural and temporal boundaries. His journey from Soviet poster artist to internationally acclaimed portraitist serves as an inspiring testament to artistic perseverance and the universal language of beauty.
Vladimir Volegov’s paintings are held in private collections worldwide and continue to be exhibited in prestigious galleries across Europe and North America. His work exemplifies the enduring power of figurative art to move, inspire, and connect us to our shared humanity.
